WOCC Bake Sale Promoting "A Day of Absence : A Satirical Fantasy" Thursday+ Friday in the CAB from 11 a.m-1p.m. Bring baked goods.
Iraq Women's Voices, Wednesday at 1pm in Sem II E1105.

Rainbow will represent us!

We will support them with $75.

Madre is coming! Discussed supporting them, didn't decided with how much money. Ale will email more information.
Discussed WOCC Tiny Theatre: Day of the Dead/Dia de los Muertos. Members can bring meal that reminds person of the one(s) they lost. There will be an Alter in the office for the month, like an instillation art peice. You can bring a picture of a loved-one and leave it there. Also, we can write something that we want to let go of on nitroglycerin paper and it will burn up!
WOCC needs reprensentatives for Colorlines Conference in San Francisco and SisterSong Conference.

We will fundraise for them throughout the year.Maybe the money raised from bakesale-ing can go to these conferences.

WoCC Writing Group: in partnership with the Writing Center.

We would meet on a regular basis, to work on our writing.
We would also sponsor speakers like poets/etc who would do workshopos with us.
Maybe we could also sponsor performances?

Keep thinking about who we want to bring for International Women's Week!

Hey ladies! Here's the gist:

Help spread the word about the upcoming performance "A Day of Absence: A Satirical Fantasy". Haley will print some more flyers to post around campus.
There is a counter protest against the Pro-Life group "40 Days for Life" from Sept. 26 to Nov. 4, I'm e-mailing the info to the group address so it can be forwarded to everyone. Please go if you're interested!
We discussed the structure of the meeting and all agree that we need a space to talk about issues and be able to support each other. However, we must make an effort to balance getting things done with meeting the needs of group members.
We further discussed the importance of having a "women of color" space where we can have a sense of privacy and comfort. However, since we are a state organization funded by student fees, we cannot turn anyone away based on gender, race, religion, etc. We can tell people to leave if their behaviour makes us uncomfortable, though. A point that was brought up was possibly using a membership process to "regulate" the members who attend meetings. We must brainstorm for ideas to keep our space private and comfortable for all the members.
We should work on a statement/paragraph that we can post on the window to complement the idea of privacy. Next meeting we will work on how we want to phrase it.
If possible, all members should try to commit to an hour a week in the space. This will help keep it accessible to members, and we want to make it as active as possible to avoid being moved during the CAB renovation. (Haley adds: We're not just worried about keeping the space-- we want to make sure the space is actually USED-- we're doing this for you, because the space is yours. You should use it!) We made a key check out list, so if you couldn't make it today and want to be able to check out a key to the space be sure to sign up.
Brainstorm for ideas for events for the coming year. We can do pretty much any kind of workshop, dance events, shows, speakers, etc.
Loretta Ross of SisterSong is a good idea. We should start fundraising asap, maybe S&A will help out once we get some money.
International Women's Week starts on March 8th, we want it to end on a happy note. Big performance? Oral history monologues are a good idea, we could use excerpts from mother/daughter oral stories that focus on sacrifices made and their impact on the next generation.

To pick up keys to open the office:

They Key is available for check out from the front desk of the S and A office on the 3rd floor of the Cab. Your name must be on the list of those with permission to check out a key. If you want to check out a key and are not already on the list, speak to either Haley or Alejandra and we can get you on the list.
You can check out the key at any time.
If you need to turn it in after the S and A office has closed, leave it in the blue metal drop box outside the door of the S and A offices.

If you want to have office hours ( a set time to be in the office at the same time a week):

Simply sign up on the office hours schedule on line.
Be sure to let Haley or Alejandra know when you'll be in the office.
Try to pick a time that is not already taken. Feel free to use the office on a Saturday or Sunday if you want to.

If you are plan on being in the office:

Please be aware of the different events or activities that are going on in WoCC so that you can answer any questions that someone may have. You can always direct people to this website.
Feel free to do your homework, read, use the computer. What ever you want. But definitely make yourself available to people who stop by.
Please be conscious of the purposes of the office when you invite people in. The WoCC office is open to all members of the community, but it is first and foremost a space for women of color. Timing is important when inviting people in. Use your discretion and everyone will be happy. Most people are respectful of the space, and this is important to maintain. We definitely want the office to be available to the community!
Food is encouraged, but what you bring in be sure to take out! Please don't leave anything in the trash that will invite critters or bugs in. Haley does not want to have to commit fruit fly genocide again!
Be respectful, if you make a mess, clean it. If someone else makes a mess, make sure they clean it themselves. That sort of thing.

The Women of Color Coalition is a community hub dedicated to creating a safe space for Women of Color. We collaborate with other campus and community groups in order to organize gatherings, forums, performances and events. We strive to educate and empower the women in our communities by honoring our unique experiences and celebrating our cultural ties.

The Women of Color Coalition has been around since the mid 1980s. Our activities range from community potlucks and gatherings to events and discussions on sexual violence and AIDS and how it affects our communities. Since 2004 Women of Color have taken up the responsibility of planning International Women’s Week, an annual week long event on Women and Global issues. Women of Color Coalition also have a long history of having queer people of color as coordinators and the mission of Women of Color Coalition has reflected a continuing dedication to queer issues.

Alright so it's been awhile and other than Jhaleh's contribution we haven't conferred on the films. Let's include the short from 9/11 and two or three of these other films (or one that you contribute on Wednesday). I'll secure the rights and we can screen them the in a two and a half weeks. (perhaps the same week that we have the tiny theatre...get a little more publicity).

Sarah and Haley were the only ones who could make this meeting.

We started planning for May's WoCC Tiny Theatre, which is about oral history. We discussed our advertising campaign which will include banners, CPJ articles, and KAOS announcements.

The actual event will be two fold. The first, a workshop/brainstorming session on May 15 from 2 to 5. This will be held in the office. There will be art supplies as well as prompts to assist in brainstorming. People will be able to work on expressing their oral histories either verbally, written, or visually.
The actual performance will be a week later, on May 21st at 7pm. The performance will come out of the brainstorming session. People will be able to share their pieces. These can range from monologues to poems to pictures to something as simple as sharing your favorite story about an ancestor. There will also be an open mic following the scheduled performance. Anyone who did not sign up early or who was inspired by the performance will be able to speak.

Also, next Tuesday we are going rug shopping! We are meeting at the library loop at 6:30.

Andy Corn is working on getting us a computer that works.

Hey all,

At our last meeting, we decided to start emailing meeting notes. This should help those of you who cannot come to the meetings still know what's going on and be involved. If you'd like to contribute your thoughts or ideas on what we talked about, feel free to email us and we will share your thoughts at the next meeting.

We now have a wetpaint webpage started for WoCC and the meeting notes as well as any of your contributions will be posted there. It's a new page now, but will be added to over time. Wetpaint is a website designed so that anyone can contribute to the page, all you have to do is get a free account and you can start making contribution! Check ours out at

We are having a performance on Friday the 27th and Saturday the 28th during Arts Walk with Safe Place on sexual assault and domestic violence. Come to the QPOC meeting on Monday at 6 if you are interested in participating!

Aishah Simmons will be coming Thursday April 19th at 7 in the Longhouse. Please come at 6 and help us set up!

Also, in an effort to have the office open more often, we are inviting you to volunteer an hour or two of your time a week to sit in the office. You can do you homework, read something from the WoCC library or just hang out. If you feel like this is something you can do, please email us some times or sign yourself up on the webpage on the "office hours" page. For the time being, either Miki or I will open the office for you, but eventually we will have a key to check out at the S and A front desk.

Also, we were invited to chat with Lara Evans, the last of the Diversity Series speakers, TODAY at 2 in C 2107. Come if you can make it!

If you haven't heard, EPOC has started! Evergreen People of Color, a group of all the poc student groups, is an idea that came out of the Day of Absence retreat. Check out their webpage at http://epoc.wetpaint.com.

Some house keeping things:
Andy Corn is going to buy us a new rug for the office! If anyone is interested in coming with me to pick out a new one, please email us. I want to do this relatively soon.

Also, we have a million Ms. Magazines in the office, from the 80's till '94 or something. We should do something creative with these! An image analysis, perhaps? Email us if you have any ideas, or post something on the webpage.

WoCC Tiny Theatre is coming soon. For those of you who don't know, WoCC Tiny Theatre is a theatre we'll be holding once a month in the office. These will range from open mics to performances to film screenings. If you have something you want to perform, or an idea of something you want to see, email us or post on the web page. Coming soon is a WoCC Tiny Theatre about oral history.

This WoCC Tiny Theatre event has two parts in the making. The first is an Oral History Workshop which will be a brainstorming time for both orally and visually exploring one's family history. The second is a performance that will come out of the brainstorming workshop followed by an open mic time for audience members to participate.
